The Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force and its families and consumer support and advocacy group are coordinating activities for National Black Balloon Day on Sunday, March 6. The event began in 2016 in Peabody, Massachusetts, and Erie County has participated each year.

The Environmental Facilities Corp. has launched the 2022 Clean Watersheds Needs Survey for New York state. As required by law, New York participates in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) national survey to assess the capital investment needed for water quality infrastructure.

In collaboration with the Erie County Bicentennial Committee (EC200), the Buffalo History Museum will hold EC200 coin redemption days March 2 through April 2. The coins feature the EC200 logo on one side and, on the other, Old County Hall, as inspired by artist Lawrence D. McIntyre's pen-and-ink sketch from his Buffalo News Sunday series "Area Landmarks."

Following Gov. Kathy Hochul's announcement on Sunday related to mask requirements in New York state schools, as of Wednesday, March 2, students and school staff will not be required to wear masks in school settings.

On Friday, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced the mask mandate currently in effect in all Erie County-owned buildings would be lifted as of Monday, Feb. 28. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website now includes information on COVID-19 community levels nationwide, a measure of the impact of COVID-19 illness on community health and health care systems, and lists Erie County in the "medium" category.

After a national search, the board of directors at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens announced Mark Mortenson will be appointed as the new president and CEO. Mortenson will step into the role following the retirement of David Swarts in March. Swarts will be retiring after 12 years with the organization.

The Erie County Department of Health is reminding Erie County residents they can seek free coronavirus testing. ECDOH has updated its procedures to make rapid (ID Now) testing available to any resident on request. Previously, rapid testing was only available from ECDOH for individuals with COVID-19 symptoms or those with a known exposure.

In February 2020, a month before the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a nationwide lockdown and months of virtual education, Grand Island High School presented the musical "Beauty and the Beast." None of the performers or their teachers had any idea that it would be two years before another musical would be produced at the high school.

On Jan. 28, Pamela Barton, the Town of Grand Island's senior accountant, filed a lawsuit against Town Councilman Mike Madigan and the Town of Grand Island, alleging Madigan placed a defamatory article in the Sept. 17, 2021, issue of the Island Dispatch. Statements in the article, she alleges, "have no basis in fact" and were "made with actual malice in disregard to plaintiff." She also alleges Madigan made defamatory comments during a Town Board workshop session on Sept. 7, 2021, and Sept. 20, 2021.
