Erie County recently chose to abandon its strict guidelines concerning quarantining in favor of New York State Department of Health guidelines, according to School Superintendent Brian Graham, who spoke at the Sept. 27 meeting of the Grand Island Board of Education.

The Erie County Department of Social Services announced applications for Home Energy Assistance Program regular benefits will be accepted beginning Friday, Oct. 1, approximately one month earlier than usual. This year, in light of continuing coronavirus-related concerns related to public gatherings, ECDSS is strongly encouraging applicants to apply online or to utilize other remote channels to apply. As in previous years, interested applicants are encouraged to apply sooner rather than later.

The Erie County Department of Health strongly recommends a flu vaccine for everyone ages 6 months and older this fall. To encourage county residents to get vaccinated against flu, Deputy Executive Maria Whyte and Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein received their flu vaccination Tuesday at a clinic for Erie County employees run by Wegmans.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, Villa Maria College will open its doors to the general public for a Health and Wellness Fair. Held in partnership with the college's on-campus food pantry, the Sister Mary Josette Food Pantry, the Health and Wellness Fair offers attendees the opportunity to receive COVID-19 vaccinations through Erie County, and flu shots through Rite-Aid.

The EC200 committee is celebrating the fourth and final event in the EC200 Heritage Commemoration Series, taking place from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the historic Roycroft Campus in East Aurora with an afternoon celebrating WNY Hispanic heritage. This free event will feature musical performances by Sol Y Sombra along with speakers discussing Hispanic heritage, with a focus on the WNY Hispanic Heritage District and the Hispanic Heritage Cultural Institute.

Pinnacle Travel hosted its Pinnacle Island 2021 Golf Tourney benefit on Aug. 13 at the Beaver Island golf course on Grand Island. A fundraiser to assist the Neighbors Foundation of Grand Island and other local groups, the golf outing saw 156 golfers form 38 teams participating. Additional Island benefactors from the event included the Grand Island Fire Co., Grand Island Police Department and Charles N. DeGlopper VFW Post 9249.

Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and Sisters of Charity Hospital have become the first hospitals in Western New York to offer what they called "next-generation technology" for dialysis care called the Tablo Hemodialysis System. The changeover to the new dialysis program within Catholic Health is aimed at improving the patient experience, while reducing the cost and complexity historically associated with dialysis treatment.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced New York's fifth "Free Fishing Day" of the year is on Saturday, Sept. 25. It coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, which is celebrated annually to promote outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and target shooting. New York provides anglers with six "Free Fishing Days" each year.

The "holiday hunt" is an extension of the late bow and muzzleloader deer season in New York's southern zone.

The Erie County Fair continues its partnership with the Can Bottle Return Co. of Hamburg to collect and recycle the returnable cans, bottles and glasses used at the annual event. The items were collected on a daily basis at the Erie County Fair from the designated containers placed around the grounds totaling 45,000 items.

Hosted by Trinity United Methodist Church at 2100 Whitehaven Road, the ladies of W.O.W. will examine the New Testament book of Ephesians and also study through several weeks of basic Christian beliefs. Grand Island Post 1346 American Legion is remembering the tragedy of 9/11 this weekend by holding a Patriot Day poppy drive in memory of the lives that were lost 20 years ago. The poppy drive will be a daylong event on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11. Donations are being accepted to purchase poppies that will help all local veterans, said Post Judge Advocate Joe Synakowski, who designed and produced this poster.

The Erie County Department of Health is providing an update on COVID-19 data. For the week ending Sept. 4, 2021, ECDOH received reports for 1,326 new COVID-19 cases among Erie County residents, a 22% increase from the previous week.
