One of the most difficult feats to accomplish in bowling is the 800 series. To succeed at that, the bowler must average 267 in a series of three games. According to Craig Davis, coach of the Grand Island High School boys' bowling team, senior bowler Talon Newton succeeded in doing exactly that.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced more than $1.4 million in federal funding to support mental health programs in east Buffalo following the Tops Market shooting last year. Administered by the State Office of Mental Health, the awards include funding for six community-based organizations to provide an array of mental health resources to help residents impacted by the shooting that killed 10 individuals last year.

As Buffalo prepares to acknowledge the first anniversary of the May 14 massacre at the Jefferson Avenue Tops grocery store, the University at Buffalo School of Social Work will host a webinar on Black racial trauma. The event will be a moment of learning and reflection to denote the ongoing existence of racial trauma in the lives of Black people.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion of La Plaza de Virginia, a $17 million mixed-use housing development that provides 46 affordable and supportive homes for seniors in Buffalo. The newly constructed development on the city's west side also features a restaurant and a community service facility that will house a recreational adult day program open to the public.

The Rotary Club of Grand Island is extremely appreciative for everyone who has donated to its unique shoe drive fundraiser. Members spent hours last weekend in the Visitor Center filling bags of shoes that will raise much-needed funds for the club, while helping others by redistributing them throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise (small business) partners.

The Erie County Department of Health's division of environmental health is ending its waiver process for property transfers effective April 1. This waiver process required a $1,000 returnable bond for some property transfers when sewage disposal (septic system) and water supply (private well) inspections could not be completed before sale due to weather conditions or other circumstances.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a new initiative to help police and prosecutors in five jurisdictions solve non-fatal shootings and prevent retaliatory gun violence. Police departments in Buffalo, Rochester, Schenectady, Troy and Utica and their county district attorneys' offices will share $866,564 in state funding to implement evidence-based approaches to improve investigations and save lives.

The Grand Island Board of Education's second budget input session, held Monday, focused on budget requests that involved such school district needs as mental health, cybersecurity, instruction for children who need to learn English as a new or second language, and proposed universal prekindergarten contracts with community providers. The Board of Education is also seeking to find a solution to the shortage of school bus drivers.
