Grand Island History Weekend on Sept. 23 and 24 offered an opportunity for people interested in local history to take a tour of some of Grand Island's historical sites, which include the Grand Island Historical Society, the Alt Farmstead, and Kelly's Country Store, which held a fall festival.

There was a Bills game on TV, it was drizzling outside, and the wind at times felt chilly. But none of those things seemed to bother the folks who came to the Fall Fest on Sunday at Kelly's Country Store, 3121 Grand Island Blvd. It was the second day of a two-day festival.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the New York Power Authority board of trustees approved more than $1.5 million in funding awards under the Western New York Power Proceeds program to Northland Workforce Training Center and Top Seedz, a Buffalo-based organic food company, designed to spur nearly $9 million in capital investments and support 53 jobs — with 11 of those jobs newly created.

In the second of two Town Board public hearings this week, residents gave their opinions Wednesday at the high school on the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Grand Island Commerce Center. That's the formal name for the mega-warehouse proposed by Acquest Development for 2780 Long Road.

Jon Roth has been part of the Grand Island Central School District for 50 years. His career began in 1973 when he was hired by H. David Myers, Grand Island's first athletic director, as a physical education teacher in Sidway Elementary School.

The Grand Island Fire Co. held a recruitment event on Sept. 16 in front of Tops Friendly Markets. Zach Bernfeld, one of the volunteers at the event, said people should consider joining the fire company because "It's good to help your community. You get free training. You can go through a bunch of fire classes and become an EMT or a paramedic, if you'd like. You can become a cadet at 16 and a regular member at 18."

On Sept. 16, the day of the Be the Match donor drive signup event at Town Hall, Kim Kalman received an anonymous letter from the wife of the recipient of her bone marrow. According to Be the Match rules, all correspondence between donors and recipients has to remain anonymous until a year after the donation.

Julia Nowak, an artist from Amherst, said she loves transforming old compact discs, DVDs and vinyl records into clocks of various sizes, each with a different abstract pattern. She creates her clocks with a technique called fluid art. Fluid art is an abstract painting technique that involves the use of fluid art mediums, such as acrylic paints.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a public hearing on the Kensington Expressway project will take place Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Buffalo. The public hearing, to be hosted jointly by the New York State Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, will provide residents and interested parties with an opportunity to publicly express their views concerning the environmental, economic and social effects of the current design plans associated with the project.
