Per the Niagara County Sheriff's Office: On July 24 at 16:56 hours, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a possible boating accident. An occupant of a mid-size anchored vessel, just east of Gratwick Park, jumped off the vessel into the Niagara River for a swim. The male subject was quickly overtaken by the fast-moving current and went under the water for a short time.

On Tuesday, local officials from North Tonawanda and Tonawanda, along with representatives from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, came together to unveil a bronze plaque in recognition of the Gateway Harbor of the Tonawandas winning the 2020 Erie Canalway Heritage Award of Excellence.

Niagara SPCA breaks ground on $1.5 million surgical suite

Donning hard hats and shovels, local officials joined administrators from the Niagara County SPCA for a groundbreaking ceremony Friday, as the organization gets set to begin construction on a $1.5 million state-of-the-art surgical suite. The end result will be a 2,000-square-foot facility complete with an X-ray room, which the SPCA said it's never had before.
NCCC postpones annual Foundation Scholarship Gala

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Niagara County Community College has decided to postpone its 30th annual Foundation Scholarship Gala. The event, originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, will now be held in spring 2021. No official date has been set at this time.

Wheatfield Town Board holds first Town Hall meeting since March

On July 6, the Wheatfield Town Board held its first public meeting at the Town Hall since it was shuttered in March due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Town Hall reopened July 15 with a slew of new safety precautions. Rows of seats in the courtroom have been taped off to ensure social distancing, and board members are spaced widely apart.

NCCC announces plans for fall semester

Niagara County Community College has announced plans for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 31. The college will offer in-person, online and hybrid classes, as well as face-to-face labs that require hands-on instruction such as culinary, CADD, health sciences and other related courses. The announcement was made in conjunction with SUNY approving the "Fall 2020 Reopening Plan for NCCC."
