Niagara County is nearing 400 positive cases of COVID-19. On Sunday, the Niagara County Department of Health issued the following update:
Niagara-Wheatfield BOE begin budget talks amid uncertainty in state funding

The Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education held a virtual board meeting this week where they began tentative budget discussions for the 2020-21 school year. A proposed budget of $77,119,627 shows only a moderate 3.7% increase from last year. However, amidst the uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, board members will have to await the governor's decision regarding the end of the month before they can decide whether or not to move forward with the figures.

The Wheatfield Family Picnic committee announced the Wheatfield Family Picnic, originally scheduled for Aug. 16, has unfortunately been cancelled.

When I pass on information to you, it is from those conferences and from the orders put out by the governor. Recommendations made and numbers given are from those agencies. I also confer with the police and fire chiefs before a recommendation is made."

As essential businesses across Niagara County seek to comply with executive orders requiring face coverings for employees, legislators David Godfrey and Jesse Gooch on Thursday announced the Niagara County Department of Emergency Services has obtained a supply of cloth face coverings that are being made available to essential businesses at no cost.

The Niagara County Legislature on Tuesday night passed a resolution extending the deadline for payment of county taxes without interest and penalties until May 31. The resolution passed unanimously.

Cambria resident to lead new sustainability division at NOCO

NOCO Energy recently announced the creation of a sustainability division within its commercial and residential heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) business based in Akron. The new division will focus on working with customers in the installation of energy efficiency heating and cooling units and equipment, energy efficiency consulting, LED lighting and other measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
NCCC Student Showcase is virtually remarkable

The Niagara County Community College Student Showcase has become an annual tradition, featuring students working with the help of faculty mentors to create projects highlighting every division on campus. In its third year, the showcase was not able to be held on campus due to COVID-19, but that did not stop organizers from pushing forward in a virtual format.
Niagara County Clerk's Office to offer some pistol permit services for those who already hold permits

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Tuesday announced his office had put a new process in place to help certain Niagara County pistol permit holders to make changes to their permits. The pistol permit office has been closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stapleton on nursing home residents: 'We're going to do whatever we need to do to make sure that they remain safe'

"We know nursing homes are a sign of concern for us, because the numbers of residents getting sick is going up, and number of positives in the nursing homes are going up. So, it'll allow us to take that hundred and put it towards trying to provide a testing for people who work in assisted living centers, nursing homes. These are people who have symptoms. And it allow us to make sure that we're preventing the spread of the infection through a nursing home or through an assisted living center."

John Syracuse, vice chairman of the Niagara County Legislature, on Monday said golf courses, campgrounds and boat launches in Niagara County are open in full accordance with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's executive orders, as well as guidance from the Niagara County Department of Health.

Higgins: Smith Boys Shipyard becomes first New York recipient of federal transportation small shipyard grant in a decade

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced a federal grant totaling $317,641 for Smith Boys Shipyard. The award is funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation Small Shipyard Grant Program. This is the first such grant awarded to a New York operator in the past 10 years.
Niagara Falls goes purple to honor hospitality employees

From 8 p.m. until midnight Monday, April 20, Niagara Falls will be illuminated purple for #HospitalityStrong, to honor hospitality industry workers worldwide who have been deeply impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Wegmans response to COVID-19 (April 16)

These meetings were conducted via video conference per the Governor's Executive Orders that provided some flexibility for public meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic."

Niagara County: Drug overdoses spike during pandemic

Acting Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti, along with Niagara County law enforcement partners, report drug overdose cases have increased during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of drug overdose cases dispatched by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office from Jan. 1 through April 6 has increased over 35% for the same time frame in 2019.
