With so much uncertainty surrounding the upcoming flu season, many people are looking for ways to protect themselves. In mid-July, Catholic Health and its foundations were notified by a third-party software vendor, Blackbaud Inc., of a cyber security breach that impacted the health system and other nonprofit organizations locally and throughout the country. The breach, which was part of a potential donor data base, included the names, medical record numbers, and dates of service for patients who received care in Catholic Health from 2016 through May of this year.

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh on Tuesday announced the Niagara County Department of Emergency Services will hold three drive-thru events on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week at the Public Safety Training Facility in Lockport to distribute masks for children going back to school.

Last Tuesday, North Tonawanda Alderman-at-Large Austin Tylec issued a press release criticizing certain city officials for their response to a critical audit of the city's finances issued by the New York state comptroller's office. Since the audit's publication, some current and former officials have disputed some of the audit's findings and have elsewhere implied it had political motivations.

Earlier this week, the New York State Department of Transportation took preliminary steps to address an area long considered one of the most dangerous roadways in the Town of Wheatfield - a stretch of Niagara Falls Boulevard running between Errick and Sy roads, including the intersection at Ward Road and Niagara Falls Boulevard.

In an effort to attract more young people to the game of golf, the Niagara County Golf Course on Tuesday announced golfers who purchase a single round of golf can bring one child 17 years of age of younger to play with them for free. This promotion is offered after noon on weekends, only during nonschool hours during the week, and will last through the end of September. Tee times must be scheduled in advance and are subject to availability.

No appointment is necessary.

Niagara County Legislature Chairman Becky Wydysh on Friday announced she is approving the reopening of gyms and fitness centers, including indoor classes, in Niagara County on Monday, Aug. 24 - the earliest date allowed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He left the decision on gym reopenings to local county officials.

On Tuesday, the North Tonawanda Common Council voted 3-1 to appoint current 2nd Ward Alderman Donna Braun as city clerk/treasurer. The position was vacated when then-city clerk/treasurer Matthew Parrish resigned on Aug. 9. Assistant City Clerk Lori Swartz has filled the position in the interim.

North Tonawanda native and (now) Buffalo State College graduate Crista Sukennik was recently a finalist for Ad Age magazine's "Young Creatives Cover Competition." In response to a blistering audit from the New York State Comptroller's office, City of North Tonawanda Accountant Jeffrey Zellner addressed the council Tuesday night and refuted some of the audit's findings. He also referred to the audit as being "politically motivated" and criticized the auditors themselves as being "unprofessional."
