NCCC postpones annual Foundation Scholarship Gala

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Niagara County Community College has decided to postpone its 30th annual Foundation Scholarship Gala. The event, originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, will now be held in spring 2021. No official date has been set at this time.

North Tonawanda public hearing held for proposed Mexican restaurant

On Tuesday, the North Tonawanda Common Council held a public hearing regarding an application for community development block grant (CBG) funding for a proposed restaurant - El Gringo Mexican Cantina - to be located at 54 Webster St. The location was most recently the site of the N.T. History Museum, and formerly the old G.C. Murphy's Department Store.

Wheatfield Town Board holds first Town Hall meeting since March

On July 6, the Wheatfield Town Board held its first public meeting at the Town Hall since it was shuttered in March due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Town Hall reopened July 15 with a slew of new safety precautions. Rows of seats in the courtroom have been taped off to ensure social distancing, and board members are spaced widely apart.

The Queen City is expected to break a 30-year-record for consecutive days with 90-degree temps, while Wednesday's high of 94 degrees tied a record set in 1988.

NCCC announces plans for fall semester

Niagara County Community College has announced plans for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 31. The college will offer in-person, online and hybrid classes, as well as face-to-face labs that require hands-on instruction such as culinary, CADD, health sciences and other related courses. The announcement was made in conjunction with SUNY approving the "Fall 2020 Reopening Plan for NCCC."

If you've driven through the Niagara-Wheatfield School District in the last few weeks, you've certainly noticed the myriad black and red lawn signs honoring recent high school graduates. They're generally about the standard size of the campaign signs you see around election time, roughly 24-by-18-inches or so. They make for a nice, quaint, school-spirited way for a parent to show pride in their child's accomplishments.
