The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced there will be lifeguard qualifier for position in the Niagara Region of State Parks. Testing - required for anyone wishing to work as a lifeguard at a state park - will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Hamburg High School, 4111 Legion Drive.

A love of the ivories is Bertha Shipton's fountain of youth − from using a hand pump to play the piano at the age of 7 and playing in marching band and school functions, to teaching hundreds of children and still playing every day as a resident at Wheatfield Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in North Tonawanda. Bertha recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by friends and family!

The Niagara County Department of Health will offer free COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older at upcoming clinics. Children ages 6 months to 4 years old may receive the Pfizer vaccine, while children ages 6 months to 5 years old can receive the Moderna vaccine.

Cornell Cooperative Extension Niagara County announced its recent enrollment in the Niagara County "Thank A Vet" program. CCE Niagara will offer free admission to the Niagara County Fair on Sunday, Aug. 7, to any current member of the military, or veteran, as part of the "Thank A Vet" program. First responders will also be admitted to the fair for free that day.

The Mental Health Association in Niagara County will host a cornhole fundraiser, "Cornhole for a Cause," from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at the Davison Road Inn, 383 Davison Road, Lockport. Proceeds from the sales will go toward programming and services for those living with a mental health diagnosis and their families in Niagara County.

The new disc golf course that opened at the beginning of summer in Royalton Ravine Park appears to be a huge hit with Niagara County residents, according to Niagara County Legislator Mike Hill. This is the second disc course opened by Niagara County Parks, with the original located in Burmaster Park at Bond Lake.

"Serving Christ and Community since 1922" is the theme of the Bacon Memorial Presbyterian Church 100th anniversary celebration event to be held Saturday, July 23, for membership and friends from the community. The church opened in 1922 and continues to serve at that very same location today. The land for the church was part of a fruit tree farm and was donated by the family of the late Jonathan Bowen.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion of a $3.5 million supportive housing project in downtown North Tonawanda. Supported through the Homeless Housing and Assistance Program, the adaptive reuse of the structure, at 49 Tremont St., created 12 units of affordable housing, including eight studio apartments with on-site supportive services to help women who have experienced homelessness and are survivors of domestic violence.

At 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to the 900 block of Pine Avenue for a report of a person down. Upon arrival, officers located a 22-year-old man from Buffalo on the street and suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers initiated aid until Niagara Falls Fire Department and AMR arrived, at which time the victim was pronounced deceased.

At approximately 5:15 a.m. Saturday, Niagara Falls Police Department officers responded to 15th Street and Pine Avenue for a report of a man shot. Upon arrival at 1504 Pine Ave., officers located a 28-year-old male suffering from numerous serious gunshot wounds, laying on the ground outside a 7-Eleven.
