Homeless veterans can find shelter and stability at Niagara Gospel Mission on Veterans Day

Whether you observe Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 10, or on the official date, Nov. 11, the holiday is "a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good," according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
NFPD responds to shooting

Shortly after 9 p.m. last night, the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to a home in the 500 block of 20th Street for a report of a man shot. Upon arrival, officers located a 23-year-old from Niagara Falls suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Destination Niagara ornament benefits Niagara Falls Fire Department Toy Fund

Now in its 95th year, the Niagara Falls Fire Department Toy Fund is an annual tradition to raise money for the purpose of providing Christmas toys for those in need. In an effort to support this cause, Destination Niagara USA has designed a new commemorative ornament for 2023 with 100% of the profits benefitting the toy fund.
Vehicle pursuit through Niagara County

At 1:52 a.m. Saturday, Niagara County Sheriff's Office patrol attempted to initiate a traffic stop for speed in the 4700 block of Tonawanda Creek Road. A white BMW sedan was observed traveling 91 MPH in the 45 MPH zone. Patrols could not safely catch up to the vehicle and the area was checked.
Niagara University receives $2.5 million gift for endowed chair of chemistry

Niagara University alumnus Michael Kakos, '60, and his wife, Aimee, have pledged a $2,500,000 gift to establish the Michael J., '60 and Aimee Rusinko Kakos Endowed Chair of Chemistry and to support the compensation and research of Dr. Mary McCourt, professor of chemistry, who will hold that position.

Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in the United States. Since lung tissue has no nerves, people often do not experience pain or symptoms until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. However, if lung cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, the cure rate can be as high as 92%. That's why adults who are at high risk for lung cancer should undergo an annual lung cancer screening, which includes a low-dose CT scan.

Vortex VR holds official grand-opening celebration

Niagara Falls has a new hub for locals and tourists alike. Vortex VR Arcade, located on the third floor of the One Niagara Welcome Center at 360 Rainbow Blvd., held its grand opening Sunday with a Halloween party. As part of the opening ceremony, Mayor Robert Restaino cut the ribbon, officially opening the facility.
