At 6:14 p.m. Monday, Niagara Falls Fire Department crews responded to a fire at Myles Scrap Yard at 5501 Lockport Road. Multiple vehicles on the southwest section of the yard were on fire. Because of the location, it took several hours to bring it under control, due to the difficulty getting equipment back to the area of the fire.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the YWCA of the Niagara Frontier will host "Coffee and Conversation" at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 32 Cottage St., Lockport. This roundtable discussion will give attendees the opportunity to learn about the wraparound domestic violence services available throughout Niagara County, with a focus on law enforcement.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $249,369 awarded to the University at Buffalo. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and awarded through the Collaborative Research grant program, the grant funding will lay the foundation for a print manuscript and a corresponding website on the Cataract House, historically located in Niagara Falls.

Western New Yorker and North Tonawanda resident Hollywood Mark was named a local Mullet Champ at the Buffalo Wing Festival held at Highmark Stadium on Sept. 3. The local competition put Mark in the running for the title of Best Mullet in the USA - against 24 other contestants from around the United States.

The Mason FOREVER Foundation awards scholarships honor of Mason Sawyer Monteleone. He was interdisciplinary health science major student at the University of Florida in Tallahassee when he tragically died in a car accident at the age of 21. Monteleone was interested in becoming a physician assistant or an orthopedic surgeon. He graduated from Canisius High School in Buffalo and attended middle school at Lewiston-Porter.

This new transportation option can be activated through Bird's free mobile phone application and used to replace gas-powered car trips when going to the store, meeting up with friends, exploring the community and taking many other daily trips within city limits for riders age 18 and up.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant, was found at two additional locations along the eastern shore of the Niagara River. The aquatic invasive was found and treated at a marina in North Tonawanda last year. This past summer, a hydrilla plant found by a boat steward during a routine inspection prompted another round of surveys along the Niagara River.

Congressman Brian Higgins, along with Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino, announced the cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls have been awarded close to $300,000 in federal funding combined to be used toward public safety and crime prevention measures. The grants are provided through the U.S. Department of Justice Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.
