Niagara County Legislature unanimously passes resolution opposed to new state gun control laws

The Niagara County Legislature unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night opposing new gun control measures it said were "rushed through the State Legislature this past summer," and took effect Sept. 1. All 15 legislators asked to be sponsors of the bipartisan resolution.

LPD provides update to fatal motor vehicle accident on Lewiston Road

At 1:54 a.m. Sunday, the Lewiston Police Department was dispatched to Lewiston Road at Creek Road Extension for a bicyclist down in the roadway. Preliminary investigations determined the bicyclist was struck by a vehicle, which then fled the scene heading south on Lewiston Road.

Niagara County's Department of Health was notified that a roadkill raccoon specimen submitted for rabies analysis for surveillance purposes was confirmed to be rabid. The animal was collected on Griswold Street, Town of Royalton, and reported positive for rabies on Sept. 8.

Tourism economy is thriving in Niagara County, reaching $831 million in 2021

In August, New York state released a tourism economics research study for 2021, detailing the economic impact of tourism across the state. The study revealed the total traveler spend in Niagara County in 2021 reached $831 million, which is an increase of 9.3% relative to 2019. Traveler spend was heavily impacted in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but tourism spending surpassed prepandemic levels in 2021.

Niagara Falls receiving funding for SNUG street outreach programs to reduce gun violence

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $1 million in state funding has been awarded to two community-based organizations in Niagara Falls and Utica to establish SNUG Street Outreach programs. Secured by the governor in this year's state budget, the funding expands the program from 12 to 14 communities statewide.

Village of Lewiston Board votes to lower speed limit; no start date set

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston on Tuesday voted unanimously to amend local law 3-2022 and lower the municipal speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. They sought to take advantage of legislation signed last month by Gov. Kathy Hochul (A.1007-A/S.2021-A) permitting municipalities to implement such a change.
