Holiday celebrations in Ransomville - like those in other communities - are adjusting to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the hamlet traditionally holds its annual Lighting of the Wreaths celebration in the days following Thanksgiving, there will be some changes in store for 2020.

The Lewiston Community Lions and VFW Downriver Post 7487 are collecting toiletry items for our local female and male homeless veterans and those in the VA hospital and shelters. Travel and full-sized requested items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, lip balm, hand sanitizer, wipes, facial tissue packets, shampoo and lotion. A special request to remember our female veterans, as well, with donations of feminine products (tampons and sanitary pads), and size 1 and 2 diapers.

As a longtime supporter of the work of the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, Ensol Inc. took a special approach this year to support the hospital. As a sign of its deep appreciation for the nurses, doctors and therapists working on the holiday, Ensol graciously donated over 165 meals catered by Osteria 166 to hospital staff in celebration of Thanksgiving.

While nary a lap was turned at Ransomville Speedway in 2020, that didn't mean the facility laid dormant during the last few months. Speedway management used the extended offseason to complete some needed upgrades to the facility that will have it ready to come back to life even better in 2021.

It's business as usual - whatever that means in 2020 - as Lewiston merchants prepare for an uptick in holiday shopping in coming weeks. Though coronavirus cases have spiked in Erie and Niagara counties this month, the village has only reported four new cases in the past six weeks. Safety protocols put in place when New York was "unpaused" last spring are still in place, and storeowners are working diligently to keep their sites clean and virus-free.

Niagara County Legislator Irene Myers on Wednesday announced the replacement of the Porter Center Road Bridge over 6 Mile Creek in the Town of Porter is complete and the road will reopen to traffic by the end of the day, this Thursday, Nov. 12. The bridge, located just south of Braley Road, has been closed since July.

Artpark & Company's board of directors announced the election of new officers and directors at the organization's annual meeting held virtually via Zoom on Oct. 28. Reelected officers include Joanne Bauer of Employer Services Corp. as chairwoman, Vincent Agnello of Niagara University as secretary, and Stephen Turner of the Bonadio Group as treasurer. Christopher Leardini was elected vice chairman.
