Native American Music Awards: Show to commemorate National Native American Heritage Month

The Native American Music Awards are back and ready to celebrate and honor their most powerful voices, while also commemorating National Native American Heritage Month, on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in Niagara Falls. This will be the organization's 20th awards event, and the first since the pandemic.

'Native American War Heroes' featured at Veterans Day children's program

A Veterans Day program for children ages 7 to 11 will take place at the Niagara History Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. The theme this year will be "Native American War Heroes" and will commemorate the local Tuscarora Heroes who assisted Lewiston residents escape the British and hostile Indian attack in 1813; as well as U.S. Union Army Officer Ely Parker, a Tonawanda Seneca, who penned the surrender terms at Appomattox, ending the Civil War.

It's fall, and influenza (flu) season is here again. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. The virus spreads mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. The virus also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Flu can cause severe illness, hospitalization and death. Anyone can get the flu, and serious problems can occur at any age.

Those interested in exams for caseworker, clerical II, correction officer and social services worker must submit an application by this Friday, Oct. 28. The exams will be given Dec. 10.

As the 2022 holiday season approaches, it appears the Town of Lewiston Family Ice Rink is being put on the shelf for this year. The Town Board announced last week that, due to a number of concerns - most notably the condition of the ice rink cooling systems and related equipment, plus uncertainties with the rink's Academy Park site - it has decided to suspend the annual holiday feature for this year.
