The Office of City of North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tyle announced a state of emergency has been declared, effective 9:30 a.m. This, officials said, is "to respond effectively to Winter Storm Elliot that threatens the public safety of the citizens of the City of North Tonawanda."

In anticipation of the expected severe weather, Niagara County Legislature Chairman Becky Wydysh, in consultation with Sheriff Michael Filicetti, County Manager Rick Updegrove and Director of Emergency Services Jonathan Schultz, on Thursday announced the closing of all Niagara County government offices for Friday, Dec. 23.
'Transformative' Niagara Falls projects to attract new visitors & development

The Niagara Falls Heritage Gateways project, which is comprised of five public gateway features intended to stimulate reinvestment in Niagara Falls, will move forward. In addition, New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has approved an agreement authorizing the Aquarium of Niagara to manage operations at the currently closed Niagara Gorge Discovery Center. Construction will now start on transforming the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center into Great Lakes 360 - an "exciting new space for Great Lakes-focused exhibits."

NYS: $24.3 million for recreation & historic preservation projects through round XII of REDC initiative

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $24.3 million has been awarded to support 56 municipalities and not-for-profit organizations for park improvements, heritage area enhancements and historic preservation projects through round XII of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. The grants from the Environmental Protection Fund are administered by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

The First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston will open its doors to the community on Christmas Eve. All are welcome to attend the candlelight service. "Proclaim the Wondrous Birth - a Christmas Eve Service of music and story," will include a choral concert at 5:30 p.m. featuring Robert Hull, music director for the church and renowned Western New York organist, directing the choir. The service will follow at 6 p.m.

Center Street blaze: Business owners still in shock after last week's fire

An early morning fire on Nov. 30 ravaged 744, 746 and 748 Center St., the site of The Vintage Barber, Soully Created and Sue's Frame of Mind. In battling the blaze, first responders from Lewiston Fire Co.
