Lewiston Town Board approves local laws, endorses Academy Park public art project

With the Buffalo Bills "Monday Night Football" game approaching, members whisked through two public hearings and approved local laws; heard a presentation by the Lewiston Council on the Arts; and discussed plans for holiday ice rink activities.

Held Aug. 28 at the Nation House on the Tuscarora Reservation, the event celebrated the life of Lelawala, daughter of Eagle Eye, chief of the Ongiras, a native tribe long extinct, as the Maid of the Mist.
Niagara University hosting discussion on preventing mass shootings

National expert Dr. Jaclyn Schildkraut will share promising ways shareholders can take an active role in helping to prevent mass shootings in their communities on Friday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. in the Russell Salvatore Dining Commons on the Niagara University campus. The presentation, "Are Mass Shootings Preventable? Lessons Learned from Previous Tragedies," is free and open to the public.

Niagara County student internship program begins Sept. 19

The Niagara County Legislature internship program is set to begin Sept. 19, and there are still some openings available for students who attend any Niagara County high schools. The program, run by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County (CCE-Niagara), goes from September to February and is a commitment of about two evenings a month.

As part of the National Federation of Just Communities national conference in Buffalo this week, members on Wednesday took a daytrip to Lewiston. Their tour bus stopped at the Freedom Crossing Monument on Water Street, and they were greeted by Sally and Josiah Tryon (aka Eva Nicklas and Tim Henderson). The two Lewiston legends recounted tales of first coming to the village, efforts to lead people to freedom, and the story behind Susan Geissler's famed bronze statue.

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that Joseph Wedge, 43, of Lewiston, who was convicted of attempted possession with intent to distribute of methamphetamine, was sentenced to serve 36 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.

Shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Niagara Falls Police Department patrol responded to 9101 Niagara Falls Blvd., for a man stabbed. A 30-year-old Niagara Falls man suffered multiple stab wounds and reported he was stabbed while at the rear of the address. He was transported to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, then transferred to ECMC where he is in stable condition.

The Levesque Institute at Niagara University, as part of a coalition of diverse organizations committed to the revitalization of the City of Niagara Falls, has formed a Niagara Falls neighborhood evaluation committee. The committee's first project is a comprehensive data collection that will provide information for a future neighborhood assessment to evaluate housing market conditions in the midtown area of the City of Niagara Falls.
