The Care-n-Share Pantry in Ransomville was the recipient of two generous donations from the community this week.
Doug Adamson, owner of Porter Empty Return in Ransomville, and Angelo Sarkees of Lewiston, who operates Deposits for Food collections in the Buffalo-Niagara area, stopped by to present Operations Manager Ellie Murphy with two checks of $500 each. The donations represent monies received in the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Care-n-Share program run by Adamson, and revenue raised by Sarkees through his initiative, as well as scrap metal collections programs.
Of the St. Mary's Care-n-Share program, Adamson commented, "It's run through the hospital, (also) with donations from throughout the area. ... We started with containers (at St. Mary's), then we started getting people donating directly here."
Adamson said the hospital program, which derives its funding from hospital employees as well as visitors, has been going on for more than a year. Last year, Care-n-Share was the beneficiary of more than $1,300 in donations - and the drive continues.
Sarkees noted he raises donations for Care-n-Share through his collections of not only returnable bottles, but also scrap metal collected from throughout the area.
"I will come and get your empty containers, and your scrap metal," he said.
Murphy said the monetary and food donations Care-n-Share receives from those in the community, such as Adamson and Sarkees, plus others, go miles toward assisting the community pantry in serving the many needy families throughout northern Niagara.
"Absolutely, depending on the season. Right now, the need, it's upward of 290-300 families in the area. We service Lewiston, Sanborn, Youngstown, Cambria, Ransomville - the whole area," she said.
Adamson and Sarkees said their food drives for Care-n-Share are ongoing and donations are always welcome. Look for the collection containers found at Mount St. Mary's Hospital, stop by to donate at Porter Empty Bottle Return in Ransomville, or contact Sarkees via email at [email protected] to help out.
