The Wheatfield Town Board revealed its 2017 tentative budget Monday night, which is $12,891,408, showing an increase of $88,791 from the 2016 adopted plan.
The tentative budget shows an increase of 0.67 percent in the total tax levy, which falls just below the tax cap of 0.68 percent. The tax levy includes the sewer, fire protection district and garbage services.
The tax levy for a typical homeowner assessed at $125,000 would be $487.42, which is 5 cents less than that of the 2016 adopted budget of $487.47.
Town budget director Ed Mongold explained the tax decrease for a typical homeowner is a result of increased assessed valuations. Therefore, the tax rate actually lowered slightly.
Town of Wheatfield Supervisor Robert B. Cliffe said the tentative budget for 2017 is a "good budget for the Wheatfield taxpayers, but it's not a perfect budget."
He added, "Expenses continue to go up each year, but revenues have not been keeping pace. They don't necessarily go up to match the expenses, specifically sales tax."
