Town of Niagara 2017 tentative budget with slight raise in property taxes

Thu, Oct 6th 2016 02:25 pm

The Town of Niagara Supervisor Lee S. Wallace announced Wednesday the town's overall tentative budget is $8,746,981, of which the total amount to be raised by taxes is $1,940,816.

The overall budget increase from 2016 raised by taxes would be $31,996, which "amounts to a very small increase overall," Wallace said.

The increases in property taxes would amount to 27 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation for homestead properties, and 12 cents per $1,000 for nonhomestead properties.

The tentative budget is under the cap by $121 for 2017. Wallace explained the tax cap, in actuality, is less than 2 percent.

"It's tied directly to the cost of living, and this year for 2017 that is estimated to be at 0.6 (percent)," he said.

Wallace said he already cut out $310,367.12 from budgets submitted by department heads, including $135,974.12 from the general fund, $45,198 from highway, $10,766 from water, $85,429 from sewer, $30,000 from fire, and $3,000 from lighting.

"I'm pretty happy with what we did," Wallace said. "We didn't cut any services, we didn't cut any positions and, overall, I'm fairly happy with the way it came out at this point in time."

Three budget work sessions were scheduled for 6:30 on Oct. 10, 11 and 17.
