Hyde Park East will again present a neighborhood yard sale on Aug. 10-11.
“Last year, the neighborhood sale was so successful, how could we not make it an annual event?” said Max, a Niagara Falls resident on Jerauld Avenue and one of the hosts of the neighborhood yard sale. “Not only did people get to sell their items, we got to meet many neighbors, who have since become friends. We are all very proud of where we live.”
Once again, Max and his wife, Brook, put out the call to the Hyde Park East neighborhood for participation, and so far, there are over a dozen houses participating. They aim to keep it the second weekend in August, so residents and shoppers alike will begin to recognize and anticipate the annual event.
“Technology has been one of the biggest helpers to this event,” Max said. “My wife came up with the QR code idea last year, which links salegoers to the Facebook event page. It lists the addresses participating, hours, and a highlight of items. People loved that they could hit up so many sales in a walkable, four-block area.”
Edward, of 2632 Fairway Drive, is a repeat participant. He noted, “The best part of last year’s sale was making people so happy when they find items they like. It may be a classic line, but it is a favorite: One person’s trash is another person’s treasure! And that’s why I love yard sales.”
Lauren, of North Avenue, said, “The sale has been positive for the neighborhood. A variety of people are involved! Even people who weren’t selling items looked out for each other and promoted their neighbors’ sales. It has been an amazing way to bring the neighborhood together.”
The sale boasted about a thousand attendees from Niagara, Erie and Orleans counties, with another 100 or so who traveled in from Canada.
“Some of the signs were so creative, hilarious!” said John and his wife, Annemarie, of Orchard Park. “The range of items available were so fun to explore … and cheap! How can we resist? We can’t wait for year two!”
The neighborhood is minutes away from Lewiston, and a stone’s throw away from exit 23 Porter/Packard Road on the 190. Organizers said there is plenty of parking around the North and Jerauld Avenue pocket park. This section of Hyde Park East is bordered by Porter Road, Hyde Park Golf Course, the rail yard, and Hyde Park Boulevard. Each home has a range of items, from children’s clothes and toys to furniture, antiques and household items.
“This year, not only am I hoping to clear out the basement, but also raise a few dollars for medical expenses,” Brooke said. “I hope the haggling is fun, but not brutal!”
Sale hours are between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The list of participating homes and details of items for sale is available on the event Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/share/itkKJmTg3xio3GAm/. For more information, email [email protected].
