Mt. Joy kicked-off the 2023 Artpark Amphitheater concert series with a musical masterpiece on Thursday. Despite being off the road for about a month, the California-Oregon-Philadelphia five-piece (Matt Quinn, vocals, guitar; Sam Cooper, guitar; Sotiris Eliopoulos, drums; Jackie Miclau, keyboard; and Michael Byrnes, bass) was sharp, delivering a mix of hit songs – “Orange Blood,” “Jenny Jenkins,” “Strangers,” “Dirty Love,” “Julia,” “Silver Lining” and “Astrovan” – and covers – The Pixies’ “Where is My Mind?,” Grateful Dead’s “Fire on the Mountain,” Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” and the Gorillaz’ “Clint Eastwood.”

Mt. Joy opted to eliminate an opening act and, instead, perform two sets – much to the delight of a locked-in, all-in audience that knew each lyric and danced all night.

Following the show, Artpark & Company crew played two songs from the late Tina Turner (“What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “Proud Mary”), leading to an impromptu celebration among lingering patrons.
