Western New York Independent Living said, “Too often people with disabilities are forgotten or underserved. This has been especially true during the COVID pandemic.”

So, WNYIL and members of its family of agencies are helping to change that, if even only a little. The organization is distributing complimentary coronavirus home test kits to many of the thousands of people with disabilities it serves. WNYIL expects to distribute more than 7,000 kits over the next few weeks.

The kits were received through WNYIL’s membership in the New York Association on Independent Living. They will be distributed through the main office in Buffalo and through affiliates Independent Living of the Genesee Region in Batavia, Independent Living of Niagara County in Niagara Falls, and the Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service in Cheektowaga.

Provided as a temporary convenience, as supplies are limited, the kits are only available to people who participate in WNYIL programs, receive WNYIL services, and/or are qualified listeners to the Radio Reading Service. WNYIL stated, “This is only meant to be a short-term solution while the manufacturing and distribution of the kit’s scales to a point where they are more readily available at retailers and other places.”

While the process is set to begin Wednesday, it may take some time for these distribution measures to get up-to-speed.

Consumers who are able can pick up kits from their local WNYIL location or department; however, pick-up is not allowed if the consumer suspects they have been exposed to COVID-19 or that someone in their household has been exposed.

Consumers can also contact their WNYIL representative to request delivery, but WNYIL’s ability to deliver or drop off kits is very limited. Delivery dates and times cannot be guaranteed, and consumers should expect the contact-free delivery to take as much as one week or longer.

Western New York Independent Living is located at 3108 Main St., Buffalo Visit www.wnyil.org.
