It’s finally the home stretch to warmer weather and lighter days, with the clocks moving forward and the official first day of spring on the 20th. March is known for all things Irish, Lenten fish frys, St. Joseph’s Day feasts, epic basketball tournaments, and so many other social events as the city begins to unthaw. However, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize March as Women’s History Month.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by strong women my whole life. From my mother, who made her life’s work educating others; my sister with endless creativity and a brilliant marketing mind; to my wife who not only runs a very successful business, but tirelessly cares for our family without complaint … and somehow makes it look easy. Women run the show.

I’m so grateful my daughters have so many role models to look up to. They’re already becoming more independent every day and, at only 3, I can’t imagine what the future holds. They are all are a constant reminder of how important women are to our society, their countless and invaluable contributions, the struggles they have and still do face on a daily basis, and the trailblazers that helped pave the way.

An obvious but important place to learn more is at any of our Erie County public libraries. This month, the Elaine M. Panty Branch in Riverside will feature an exhibit of biographies about famous women in history. Later on, the Buffalo & Erie County Library will host participants of the annual Women’s March, where live speakers and performers will lend their talents and wealth of knowledge to attendees.

Our own History Museum also has an abundance of resources and exhibits. Currently, The Uncrowned Queens Institute has an exhibit, “Say Their Names: Honor Their Legacies,” which features biographies and video interviews of numerous African American women who had an important role in building this great city of Buffalo.

You can also show your support this month by visiting local women-owned businesses. An extensive directory can be found through the WNY Women’s Foundation, a fantastic organization that works relentlessly to ensure the women in our community are heard, supported, and advocated for. They are featured on the Erie County website, which provides further national and local resources specifically for women. The direct link is http://www3.erie.gov/csw/resources-women.

There are numerous resources available, and I invite you to spend some time this month exploring and learning about all the incredible contributions women have made in history and continue to make today. There’s always more that can be done, and I hope to personally and professionally help create more opportunities and programs for the women and girls of this county to thrive.

As always, I welcome you to reach out to my district office at 716-832-0493 with any questions or concerns.
