While waiting for a Small Business Saturday swag bag from the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce last weekend, people struck up conversations regarding the construction taking place across the street.

A WellNow Urgent Care center is being built at 860 Center, right in between Lewiston Family Dental and the APlus gas station/Sunoco minimart.

“We expect construction to be completed in March, and we anticipate an early-spring opening,” Public Relations Manager Annie Keller said Tuesday. “We’ll be hiring five to 10 employees to staff the new center. Positions will be posted to our careers website at https://www.wellnow.com/join-our-team, and anyone interested is encouraged to apply.”

She explained, “The new center will provide treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses, as well as occupational medicine services, including workers’ compensation assistance, pre-employment physicals, drug and alcohol testing and more. Most insurance is accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid, and we offer competitive self-pay rates for patients without insurance.”

Almost a year ago, architect and Historic Preservation Commission member Jim Fittante presented a business proposal on behalf of WellNow for the parcel formerly owned by Emery Simon. The HPC, Planning Board and Village Board of Trustees discussed the project at length over a nearly three-month period. Plans were approved in February.

In late-April, Keller said, “We’re very excited to be bringing convenient care to the Lewiston community. We recognized that there was a need and opportunity to provide local residents with greater access to quality care with shorter wait times, walk-in service and lower costs than the traditional emergency room. As most people have experienced at some point, injuries and illnesses tend to happen at the most inconvenient times, including evenings and weekends. WellNow Urgent Care is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with extended hours available at some locations. We also offer virtual care 24/7, so patients can receive the care they need anytime.

“Our goal is to make it easier for patients to get the treatment they need quickly, close to where they live and work, and get back to their lives instead of waiting for hours in an emergency room or delaying care.”

The almost one-acre site where this WellNow is being built became vacant in April 2012, when the building that houses the Chamber of Commerce office – and at one time a veterinary clinic – was transported to its current location in Academy Park.
