'Talking Gets Us There' - 'PBS KIDS Talk About: Race and Racism'

EPIC-Every Person Influences Children and Buffalo Toronto Public Media recently partnered to present “Talking Gets Us There,” a free, family learning event for parents and caregivers of young children. It featured video clips and strategies from “PBS KIDS Talk About: Race and Racism.” This event was sponsored by the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County, and presented in collaboration with the Buffalo Urban League and the Buffalo Museum of Science, with its name inspired by U.S. Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman.

"United Way of Buffalo and Erie County is pleased to support this important community conversation on race and racism for families of young children," said Michael Weiner, UWBEC president and CEO. "Creating community change starts with opportunities like this to learn, connect and grow our understanding of the role we each play in building a more equitable Erie County. Thank you to EPIC and Buffalo Toronto Public Media for bringing 'Talking Gets Us There' to Buffalo."

A press release said, “The program featured authentic conversations between real children and their parents about race and racial justice-related topics in an age-appropriate way. Families enjoyed a meal together before the adults moved into the presentation, and the children receive a special, after-hours, highly supervised private tour of the museum. Families also left that evening with a personalized plan and set of commitments on how they are bringing advocacy to their families and community.”

Burgess, EPIC's executive director. "Thanks to the generous support of the United Way, we are able to support families in having the talks they may not have otherwise."
