Submitted by the New York State Gaming Commission

Even though the record-setting $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot was claimed in California, ticket sales leading up to the Nov. 7 draw generated more than $100 million combined for New York’s public schools and Lottery retailers.

The Powerball jackpot began rolling to its record amount in August, resulting in 41 drawings held until it was won this month. In New York state, Powerball ticket sales totaled $244.5 million during the run. All of New York’s profits from the sales are constitutionally dedicated to New York’s K-12 public schools, totaling $85,570,234. Commissions on Powerball sales paid to retailers across the state totaled $14,669,183.

“The numbers speak for themselves: The New York Lottery provides fun and entertainment for millions of responsible New Yorkers while also repeatedly smashing revenue records for public schools and supporting small businesses across the state,” New York State Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer said. “The Gaming Commission will continue to provide effective regulation and operation of the Lottery to further its mission to support our schools and retailers.”

The Nov. 7 prize was the second multistate jackpot to climb beyond $1 billion in 2022. On July 29, a $1.34 billion Mega Millions jackpot was won in Illinois after 30 drawings. New York Lottery sales totaled $126,627,823, aid to education totaled $44,319,738 and retailer commissions totaled $7,597,669.

Multiple New Yorkers won prizes during the Powerball roll up between August and Nov. 7:

√ Ten $1 million second-prize winners

√ One Powerplay winner of $2 million

√ 116 $50,000 winners

√ Six Powerplay winners of $100,000

√ One Powerplay winner of $150,000.

The New York Lottery continues to be North America's largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.6 billion in lottery aid to education for fiscal year 2021-22 to help support education in New York.

The New York Lottery is committed to providing players with a range of fun, entertaining games in a socially responsible manner.
