Obituary: Lenora 'Nonnie' Carroll

Lenora “Nonnie” Carroll (nee Marshall) of Grand Island, passed away peacefully June 24, 2022. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry Carroll; predeceased by three brothers and a sister; the loving mother of Roger (Deborah) Carroll, Deborah (Sandy) Tirado and James (Judith) Carroll; grandmother of Colleen (David) Nossavage, Laura (Timothy) Schmidt, Kevin (Mandy) Carroll, Dennis (Amy) Carroll, Maureen (Matthew) Fox, James Ryan Carroll, Allison (Greg) Jarret and Sean (Hannah) Carroll; great-grandmother to 14 children ages 2 to 25. Lenora is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Canada, with a special fondness for niece Christine Carroll. She will be fondly remembered by many friends and neighbors on Grand Island.

“Nonnie” was born in 1920 in Truro, Nova Scotia, where she met the love of her life, Henry. They married in Brantford, Ontario, in 1946 and immigrated to Schenectady, New York, in 1958. They subsequently lived in Memphis, Oklahoma City and Plantation, Florida, before settling on Grand Island for the past 30 years.

“Nonnie” was active in the St. Stephen’s parish, Golden Age Center, and she volunteered and chaired many civic activities. The Grand Island Chamber of Commerce honored her as Citizen of the Year for her service to the community.

A memorial Mass and celebration of life will be held at St. Stephen’s Church, 2100 Baseline Road, at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 11.
