$5,000 of community benefits funding was awarded to Literacy Buffalo Niagara, with an additional $5,000 to Project Flight

Erie County Legislator Lisa M. Chimera was joined by leadership from Buffalo & Erie County Public Library on Wednesday to present two checks, each in the amount of $5,000, to Project Flight and Literacy Buffalo Niagara. The funding was made available through the legislator’s annual community benefits allocation.

“As a former educator I find both of these organizations so vitally important to our community,” Chimera said. “Reading provides the foundation for education and opportunity. These groups provide both the knowledge and materials to ensure that our youth are given the greatest opportunity for success. I am so proud to help support their mission of universal literacy.”

Literacy Buffalo Niagara provides free tutoring in Erie and Niagara counties through engagement and training of diverse community volunteers.

“We are humbled that Legislator Lisa Chimera chose to recognize our work at Literacy Buffalo Niagara with Community Benefits Funding,” Literacy Buffalo Niagara Executive Director Tara Schafer said. “Every single penny helps those in need overcome their literacy barriers in hopes of a bright future. Thank you to Legislator Lisa Chimera and Erie County.”

Project Flight is a Buffalo-based not-for-profit that provides reading materials, and encourages children to be presented with a literate environment, both at home and at school.

“We thank the Legislator for finding the value in our work, and are grateful to have received this funding,” said Dr. Elizabeth Capella, Project Flight co-founder and co-director.

Both groups work closely with the BECPL, and have office space at the Central Library at 1 Lafayette Square.
