Modern Disposal Services recently teamed up Lt. James Lucas, Sheriff Michael Filicetti and the Niagara County underwater recovery team to support a new underwater metal detector unit for their division. The new device has advanced technology to make it easier for the underwater team to locate a variety of articles when needed in certain situations and difficult conditions.

The dive team has not had an underwater metal detector in recent years due to lack of funding.

“We are thankful for community partners like Modern that support our law enforcement mission,” Filicetti said. “With this donation our underwater recovery team will have the tools they need as they operate in challenging conditions.”

Modern explained, “Contributions like this often happen due to a special connection. In this case, Niagara County Coroner James Carroll help make the connection. A few years ago, Carroll accidentally dropped his metal badge in the river. When he asked the recovery team for assistance, Lt. Lucas revealed that, sadly, his team did not have such a device. His division had put a request in yet, due to the pandemic and changes in federally funded programs, the metal detector was no longer approved.

“Carroll quickly started to think of community partners who value safety and helping those in need. Modern surfaced as the first company to call and, within a few days, the underwater detector was ordered.”

Modern CEO Mike McInerney said, “Safety is our top priority, every day – for our employees, our families, and our towns. We are happy to partner with the Sheriff’s Office to further the safety of our community. We realize how dedicated these officers are, and are happy to help support their important work.”

The new metal detector has already been used in a few recovery efforts, including the discovery of a gun in hostler.
