Ever wonder what is beneath your feet?

What is a fossil? What minerals can be found locally? How is jewelry made? What geological processes formed our area and the world? These are some of the topics that members of the Buffalo Geological Society Inc. (BGS) study. We conduct field trips, and offer programs designed to educate the general public on a variety of geological science topics.

The BGS was formed as the Geological Section of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences (BSNS), which operates the Buffalo Museum of Science. The BGS has been an affiliate of the BSNS since it was formed in February of 1938 as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. The purpose of the Buffalo Geological Society is to engage in and encourage the study of the geological sciences, the lapidary arts, the collection of fossils, minerals, and rocks, and to promote exhibits and sponsor excursions and field trips.

The Buffalo Geological Society’s activities include:

√ Monthly meetings featuring guest speakers October through April;

√ The annual banquet in May with featured guest speakers;

√ Monthly continuing education meetings;

√ Mineral and fossil collecting field trips to various locations in Western New York, New York state, Cincinnati, Ohio, Pennsylvania, the Chesapeake Bay region and Canada;

√ A September annual picnic and rock swap;

√The annual Gem-Mineral-Fossil Show at the Erie County Fairgrounds, Hamburg, during the month of March;

√ A monthly newsletter and website with information on programs, events and activities of interest to members; and

√ Support of local educational organizations, and other activities.

The BGS has an office and holds monthly and board meetings in the Heritage Discovery Center, 100 Lee St., Buffalo. The BGS newsletter and field trip information is emailed to members. Membership forms are available on the website.

√ “Dinosaurs are Coming!” – To the BGS’ 53rd annual Gem-Mineral-Fossil Show, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, March 18-19, 2023, at the Erie County Fairgrounds in the NYS Police, Market and Grange Buildings.

Please note the expanded hours of this year’s show due to the popularity of dinosaurs. In addition to viewing the models of over a dozen dinosaurs, there will be actual dinosaur bones collected by Glen LaPlaca, of Past and Present, on display.

The BGS has something for everyone in the family. Visit the website bgsny.org for more information.
