As finishing touches on Center Street’s repaving continue, the large, maroon “Welcome to Historic Lewiston” sign was removed Monday.

Mayor Anne Welch asked the New York State Department of Transportation to take down the two-sided marker – a green state directional was on the back – when the enhancement project was first announced in 2019.

US Traffic Control crews conducted the sign-removal operation at Center and South Ninth streets – adjacent to the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce.

This is part of a $2 million milling project initiated so as to be proactive against larger street deficiencies that would take more time, manpower and money to repair. It was funded by the state, as Center Street is a New York-owned/operated roadway.

Additional enhancements include new curb cuts and repaved crosswalks (bricks also were removed at these intersections), with new street lights/poles and signs still to come.

Welch said, “I am excited to see the removal of the large ‘Welcome to Historic Lewiston’ sign and the large NYS DOT route sign. These signs were installed over 20 years ago and have seen better days. The NYS DOT agreed to remove the old signs and replace the NYS route sign with a smaller version in a different location closer to the routes. This is one more step in redeveloping Academy Park. We are hoping to build a new pavilion in the park to accommodate the Farmers Market, the Peach Festival, other events and family picnics.”
