Special Olympics New York hosts spring games

Approximately 140 athletes expected to attend

With the Summer sports season in full swing, Special Olympics New York’s western region is set to host track and field competition Saturday at Tonawanda High School, 600 Fletcher St. Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:45 a.m., with the competition beginning at 9:30 a.m.

A Law Enforcement Torch Run will commence the games as part of the opening ceremonies. In addition, Special Olympics NY Healthy Athletes volunteers from University at Buffalo will be on hand to conduct dental screenings.

Special Olympics New York is the largest state chapter in the country, serving more than 31,000 athletes across New York with year-round sports training, athletic competition, and health screenings. The organization also partners with about 250 schools statewide to offer Unified Sports, where students with and without disabilities compete as teammates.
