Vaccine now available to children ages 5-11

Congressman Brian Higgins on Wednesday welcomed the recent announcement the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for use to vaccinate children ages 5-11.

He said, "The COVID-19 vaccine represents the best of how scientific advancement can improve quality of life. Today's announcement, expanding eligibility of the vaccine to children aged 5-11 after significant study, is a welcome step to help our community continue to work to overcome the impact the pandemic has had on our health and our lives. I look forward to working with partners in the community to ensure this roll-out moves smoothly and safely."

This decision by the FDA was supported by a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made on Tuesday. Accordingly, the Biden administration announced it is working to ensure parents will be able to use the Vaccines.gov portal to book shots for their kids by the end of the week.

To assist with vaccinating Western New York children, the Erie County Department of Health will be joining the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital to provide a vaccine clinic on Saturday, Nov. 6, to offer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to children ages 5-11. Parents looking to get their child vaccinated at this event must first register by calling 716-858-2929. Additional clinics will be announced in the days ahead.

Further information for parents is available on the CDC website at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations/children-teens.html.
