Buffalo State College announces commencement plans

SUNY Buffalo State College will confer degrees on roughly 1,500 undergraduate and 725 graduate students during its 150th commencement celebration on Saturday, May 21, in the college’s Sports Arena.

Degree candidates will be honored at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. baccalaureate ceremonies, and a 5 p.m. graduate ceremony. The 9 a.m. ceremony recognizes degree candidates from the School of Arts and Sciences and Individualized Studies. The 1 p.m. ceremony celebrates degree candidates from the School of Education and the School of the Professions. The 5 p.m. ceremony honors candidates from the Graduate School.

√ Letitia A. James, the 67th attorney general for the state of New York, will deliver the commencement address at the 9 a.m. ceremony. An experienced attorney and public servant with decades of legal work and a long record of accomplishments, she is the first woman of color to hold statewide office in New York, and the first woman to be elected attorney general in New York. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she is a graduate of Lehman College and Howard University School of Law. Read more about the attorney general.

√ Joseph “Grandmaster Flash” Saddler, DJ, producer, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, will receive a SUNY honorary doctor of fine arts at the 9 a.m. ceremony. Darryl W. Dennard, Class of 1981 – an award-winning broadcast journalist – will receive a SUNY honorary doctor of humane letters at the 1 p.m. ceremony. Eric Greenberg, ’78, award-winning journalist, communications and outreach director, and interfaith leader, will receive a SUNY honorary doctor of humane letters at the 5 p.m. ceremony. Read more about the honorary degree recipients.

√ The following graduates of the Class of 2022 will be honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence in recognition of their academic and extracurricular achievements, leadership, and service: Kassius J. Broadus, Sara J. Hillman and Joana C. Leamon. Cody B. Crist will receive the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence Special Award for Military Service.

√ Nicholas M. Stanford will deliver the baccalaureate student address as the recipient of the President’s Medal for Outstanding Undergraduate Student. Solomon Joseph will deliver the graduate student address as the recipient of the President’s Medal for Outstanding Graduate Student.

√ In addition, the College Council Medal will be presented to Todd W. Brason, ’85, chairman and founder of Willcare; and Gary M. Brost, chairman and CEO of Strategic Investments & Holdings Inc.
