The new growing season means that farmers’ markets are now open for business. Here on Grand Island, the Grand Island Farmers Market, held at Tom Thompson and Son farm, 2487 Long Road, reopened on a very windy May 7 with the sales of plants, hanging baskets, eggs, early produce and baked goods.

According to Tom Thompson, this year’s plan will feature one market per month, which will be announced on the Thompson Farms Facebook page.

“It will be an event once a month. We’re open, though, every day for egg sales and whatever produce we may have, but the vendors, other than us, will be bringing their stuff once a month,” Thompson said. “We should have our first crop of corn in right around the July 4th weekend, so you’ll be able to buy local sweet corn then. We’ve got 600 super sweet candy onions growing in the back right now. We’ve got all of the rhubarb that you could possibly want. It’s coming in right now. We’ll have strawberries coming up from one of our associate farms out on Route 104. And then, we’ll have the same stuff we had last year. All of the good stuff. The peaches, apples and everything. In the fall, we’ll have pumpkins and all of the bigger stuff. Our 350 chickens are living life lovely, cranking out 300 eggs a day.

“Hopefully, we will get the barbecue started up again, with breakfast sandwiches. We will announce that on our Facebook page. The reason we’re cutting back on the Saturday things is because we’ve got so much activity on other farm in the southern tier that we’ve got to get done.”
