National Grid has awarded $662,000 in economic development grants to fund four western New York projects that are designed to grow the regional economy. The company provided the funding through its suite of economic development programs that support initiatives such as brownfield remediation, restoration of longtime vacant buildings and facility upgrades.

“Our customers have come to depend on us whether they’re breathing new life into vacant buildings or expanding or streamlining manufacturing operations,” National Grid Regional Director Ken Kujawa said. “They work closely with us to determine which of our economic development programs can aid their investments, while strengthening their businesses and the communities where they’re located.”

The four projects that are benefitting from National Grid funding include:

•Chautauqua County cold storage facility approved for $273,000 grant

The project: Americold Logistics LLC, which owns and operates temperature-controlled warehouses across the U.S., is planning a cold storage and distribution center at 1 Williams St., Dunkirk. The facility will serve one of the company’s top customers and its current expansion project.

Grant program: To offset temporary and new electricity infrastructure costs related to the project, which include a pad-mount transformer, National Grid provided a $273,000 economic development grant through its Electric Capital Investment Incentive program. This program provides funds to offset costs associated with utility infrastructure upgrades to accommodate business expansion or new construction projects.

•Conversion of former lumber processing center aided by $239,000 grant

The project: Enterprise Lumber & Silo LLC is renovating a former lumber processing center and warehouse at 211 Main St., in the City of North Tonawanda. When complete, the 100-year-old building will combine its historic features with 15,000-square-feet of high-tech office space.

Grant program: $239,000 of project funding was provided through National Grid’s brownfield redevelopment program, which funds utility-related infrastructure improvements and other costs to progress the redevelopment of a brownfield site or building.

•Tugby-Lennon buildings boosted by $100,000 National Grid grant

The project: The Tugby-Lennon buildings, located at 320 and 324 Niagara St., Niagara Falls, are being renovated to include 10 apartments and 4,000-square-feet of commercial/retail space. The $3.4 million project is being supported by Niagara Falls City Development Corp., USA Niagara Development Corp., and Niagara County Industrial Development Agency.

Grant program: $100,000 of project funding was made available through National Grid’s Main Street Revitalization program, which is used to support renewal plans of main streets and commercial corridors in villages, towns and cities within the company’s service territory.

•Expansion at LeRoy manufacturer to be supported by $50,000 grant

The project: Aluminum Injection Mold Co. LLC requires an upgrade of its electricity service to support an expansion of its injection mold process, a result of their customers’ desire for their products to be made in the U.S.

Grant program: A $50,000 National Grid Electric Capital Investment Incentive program grant will offset contractor costs related to the project.

National Grid’s Economic Development Programs
