Lewiston VFW provides update on Memorial Day ceremony

Submitted by VFW Downriver Post 7487 Cmdr. Gordon Spencer

This year, the Memorial Day Remembrance Committee has decided to forgo the parade and luncheon because of the Lewiston bicentennial parade and celebration.

VFW Post 7487 will conduct a celebration and a ceremony on Memorial Day beginning at 11 am. Our program will include a guest speaker along with a short program. This year, we will take time to remember three prominent members of our community who were VFW members and volunteers within Lewiston.

Those who plan to attend would be asked to adhere to the current COVID-19 restrictions as per the state on Memorial Day.

Since VFW Post 7487 dedicated the “Circle of Honor” monument in Academy Park on 11 November 2019, names have been added. We are again scheduled to add names before Veterans Day. We would ask those that have submitted names that are not on the monument to please be patient.

During the Memorial Day weekend, VFW Post 7487 will again be distributing poppies at DiMino Tops Market of Lewiston on Friday through Sunday before Memorial Day. All contributions collected will go into our VFW Post 7487 Bruce Sutherland/Larry Stephens Scholarship Fund. We will be distributing two $750 scholarships: one to a student from Lew-Port, and one to a student from Niagara Wheatfield. Please stop by Tops and receive a poppy to wear during Memorial Day.

ln June, for Flag Day, VFW Post 7487, along with Lew-Port Middle School, will be conducting our annual flag retirement ceremony

Thank you for your continued support.
