Shoppers can support life-saving work of American Heart Association both in stores & online

Big Lots is supporting the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, through “Life Is Why,” a cause marketing campaign benefitting the American Heart Association. “Life Is Why” aims to inspire consumers to celebrate their reasons to live healthier, longer lives – by giving.

“Heart disease continues to impact many of our families and loved ones, including those of our associates and customers, and we’re passionate about changing that,” said Bruce Thorn, president and CEO of Big Lots. “Together with our generous associates and customers, we’re pleased to support the American Heart Association and the important work they’re doing to improve health outcomes and help make a healthier, longer life possible for everyone.”

From Feb. 1-20, more than 1,400 Big Lots retail locations will provide shoppers the opportunity to donate at checkout to support the mission of the American Heart Association. In addition to supporting the mission through customer donations at the register, the Big Lots Foundation is committed to donating up to $1 million over the next two years by matching any gifts given online to the American Heart Association made on National Wear Red Day (Feb. 4).

A press release noted, “Big Lots, whose foundation is particularly focused on health care and education, has been a relentless supporter of the American Heart Association’s mission for more than a decade.”

Central Ohio American Heart Association Executive Director Nancy Tobbe said, “The American Heart Association believes every individual deserves the opportunity to live a long, healthy and happy life, but unfortunately heart disease and stroke are robbing too many of us of this chance. Together, with Big Lots and our ‘Life is Why’ supporters, we are working to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to spend their time healthy and more joyfully with family and friends.”

Donations through the “Life is Why” campaign – no matter the amount – allow the American Heart Association to implement initiatives such as:

√ Fund research that can improve the health outcomes of heart and stroke patients;

√ Train more than 2.5 million high school students in CPR annually; and

√ Support the work of local entrepreneurs and organizations working to improve health outcomes in under-resourced communities.
