As the November payment of the Child Tax Credit hits bank accounts, Congressman Brian Higgins is detailing the impact the expanded credit is having on local families.

Data released by the Joint Economic Committee shows families in Western New York’s three congressional districts (NY-23, NY-26 and NY27) received a total of $93 million during the month of October. The tax credit is helping 91% of the families in Higgins’ district and approximately 367,000 children across Western New York.

“This is a game-changer for many local families, taking the struggle out of paying monthly bills and allowing parents to plan for the future,” Higgins said.

His camp noted the American Rescue Plan Act expanded the Child Tax Credit for one year, from $2,000 per child to $3,000 per child between the ages of 6 and 17, and $3,600 per child under 6 years old. It also allowed for half of the tax credit to be distributed to families on the 15th of each month between July and December 2021.

The Build Back Better Act, which could be considered by the House of Representatives as soon as this week, would extend the expanded Child Tax Credit through 2022. Higgins who sits on the Ways and Means Committee – which oversees tax policy – is cosponsoring the American Families Act, which would make the expanded Child Tax Credit permanent. He is urging the Internal Revenue Service to adjust the online portal to allow families with new babies to update dependent information to allow for additional Child Tax Credit benefits.

For those eligible and not already receiving the advance Child Tax Credit payment, Nov. 15 is the deadline to apply. Visit www.getctc.org.
