Application window closes Dec. 17

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program application period is now open with a deadline of 5 p.m. Dec. 17.

“The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program provides the critical funding for equipment and training that keeps both firefighters and communities safe,” Higgins said. “We encourage local fire departments to apply.”

The AFG program provides competitive grants to fire departments and nonaffiliated EMS organizations to help improve the effectiveness of community firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, and to establish or expand fire prevention programs throughout the U.S. All applications are submitted to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and go through a nonpartisan, merit-based review ranked by factors established by a panel of fire service professionals.

Congress approved $414 million for the AFG program for fiscal year 2021.

Live webinars, hosted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will provide an overview of the AFG program, with tips for preparing an application and important reminders on the process. Dates for the workshop webinars can be found by visiting https://www.fema.gov/grants/preparedness/firefighters/workshops.

Local fire departments with questions can contact the AFG help desk at [email protected] or 1-866-274-0960. More information on the fire grant program is available through the federal fire grant website at https://www.fema.gov/grants/preparedness/firefighters/assistance-grants.
