The Erie County Department of Health announced that, with reported COVID-19 cases through Thursday, the rate for new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents in the past seven days is 91. This means that, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention thresholds for community transmission, Erie County is now considered in a “substantial” category of COVID-19 risk, down from a “high” level.

ECDOH said this decrease in community transmission may signal operational changes for area schools and school districts, based on current New York state guidance.

“Dropping below that ‘100 cases’ threshold shows that our county is on the right path in reducing the number of daily cases, which, in turn, will mean fewer hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19,” Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein said. “We know how to keep that momentum going: vaccination for all who are eligible, including youth ages 12 to 15 years old, and continued public health preventive measures.”

For Thursday, ECDOH confirmed 118 new COVID-19 cases, for a total of 836 new cases in the past seven days. Total confirmed cases through May 13 are 87,765.

NYS posts updated vaccination data at its vaccine tracker web site, along with a recently added “percent population vaccinated by age group” section. Through May 12, the 65-74 age group had the highest percentage of individuals receiving at least a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine (87.1%), while the 16-25-year old age group had the lowest (41.6%). The 0-15-year-old age group will see its percentage increase as ECDOH and community pediatricians vaccinate school-age children in the coming weeks.

The full schedule of ECDOH COVID-19 vaccine clinics is available at www.erie.gov/vax. Vaccination estimates by ZIP code through May 10 are posted to the ECDOH website. The department provides updates on Tuesdays.
