A resolution by Niagara County Legislator Christopher Robins calling on New York state to consider a redesign for Route 104 in front of Niagara University to allow better pedestrian access to the Shoreline Trail and Niagara Gorge was unanimously passed Tuesday night by the Niagara County Legislature.

“We all know that New York state has shown a commitment to opening up access to the Niagara River from the surrounding communities in Niagara Falls,” Robins said. “And the Shoreline Trail, running along the Niagara Gorge, is a key part of that access. Yet, Niagara University has 4000 graduate and undergraduate students on its campus across the street who cannot safely access the trail. We need to change that.”

Robins said there are already plans in place to reconfigure the intersection at Hyde Park Boulevard and Route 104. He is suggesting some kind of traffic calming and public access design be incorporated into these plans.

“There is a lot of momentum right now with the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Gateway Plaza at Devil’s Hole, now under construction, which will connect the NU Power Trail with the shoreline, as well as the new $50 million Gorgeview Trail leading to the downtown business district,” Robins said. “We are slowly undoing past mistakes and opening up new opportunities. Connecting the NU campus to these efforts would be another step in the right direction.”
