NYS Police & Erie County Sheriff’s Office to offer car seat checks ahead of Child Passenger Safety Week

By AAA of Western and Central New York

Child Passenger Safety Week kicks off Sept. 19, and AAA is getting a jump start on safety with the New York State Police and Erie County Sheriff’s Office by offering free car seat checks and installation advice.

Did you know? Car crashes are the leading safety issue facing children. Approximately 183,000 children were injured in car crashes in 2018 – more than 500 injuries per day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Parents and caregivers are less likely to seek car seat inspections as children grow into forward-facing and booster car seats. Child passenger safety technicians inspect about four times the amount of rear-facing car seats than they do forward-facing car seats, and 73% of forward-facing seats are not correctly installed.

Car seat safety will be an important part of AAA Western and Central New York’s family-friendly “Trips, Trucks, and Trunks” event. The New York State Police and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office will have certified car seat technicians on-site. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers are encouraged to participate.

The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at AAA – Amherst Travel & Insurance Center, 100 International Drive, Williamsville. It will also highlight several services from travel, insurance, automotive and New York safety experts.

Here's what to expect:
