John R. Koelmel, chairman of New York Power Authority board of trustees, received the Spence Vanderlinden Public Official Award from the American Public Power Association. The award recognizes elected or appointed local officials who have contributed to the goals of the American Public Power Association.

A press release noted, “Koelmel enabled NYPA to realize significant operational achievements in 2020 as the Power Authority responded to the safety and health needs of employees and customers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. NYPA's board took a critical step, led by Koelmel, approving a relief program for its economic development customers, waiving applicable energy and demand rate increases. In coordination with APPA, Koelmel also authorized NYPA’s deployment to Puerto Rico to help restore power after an earthquake in January 2020.”

In addition, Koelmel and NYPA are advocates for adopting new technologies to improve customer service. In December, through NYPA's e-mobility programs, the Power Authority completed the largest public electric vehicle fast-charging station in the Northeast at JFK International Airport.

NYPA President and CEO Gil C. Quiniones said, “Chairman Koelmel is a steady, guiding force at the helm of the New York Power Authority, passionately driving the vision for a thriving, resilient New York state powered by clean energy. Deeply caring about the mission and future of public power, he provides sage advice and direction to the Power Authority’s leadership on our statewide operations, always putting the people of New York state first. In a challenging 2020, his guidance and support were paramount in navigating the pandemic while also remaining focused on achieving the Power Authority’s long-term goals.”
