Buffalo Bills Foundation teams with Buffalo Go Green & Community Health Center of Buffalo to give a shout for food as medicine

According to Buffalo Go Green, impoverished neighborhoods are often located in "food deserts" where supermarkets are rare and residents' ability to purchase healthy food is restricted by limited transportation and low income. These factors force residents to rely on convenience stores and fast-food chains for nutrition. This, in turn, is a public health danger, contributing to higher rates of diabetes, cardiac disease, and other obesity-related illnesses among poor populations.

Founder and Executive Director Allison DeHonney recognized the issue and developed the first FVRx (fruit and veggie prescription program) in partnership with Dr. LaVonne Ansari of Community Health Center of Buffalo five years ago. The program has expanded since and is serving approximately 75,000 individuals to help them gain control over their health issues by eating nutritiously and seeing the fruits (pun intended) of their new lifestyle when they visit their doctor.

A press release stated, “Besides distribution of healthy, locally grown food at mobile markets, a nutrition flyer including a featured and seasonal fruit or vegetable and recipes is also provided each patient. And now, to assure these flyers are kept for future use, the Bills Foundation has awarded funding and a twist to make them collectors' items.”

The organizations will join with Bills Legend Jon Corto for the first distribution of nutrition guidelines from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, June 24, at Community Health Center of Buffalo, 34 Benwood Ave., Buffalo.

A current Bills player or team legend is expected to partner up each week, along with their nutrition hints.

The release noted, “We'll be distributing healthy, locally grown food at our weekly mobile market at Community Health Center of Buffalo along with the Bills Foundation and some little surprises, too!”
