Seven Bills coaches served meals prepared by chef Darian Bryan to City Mission guests

√ Event marks first community meal at the new Alfiero Family Center of Hope and Promise

On Wednesday, the Buffalo City Mission held its third Buffalo Bills community meal, and the first at the Alfiero Family Center of Hope and Promise. Meals were served by seven Buffalo Bills coaches and prepared by chef Darian Bryan of The Plating Society. Guests included members of the City Mission’s transitional housing program and emergency shelter guests.

“The City Mission is extremely grateful to the Buffalo Bills coaches for joining us at today’s community meal and to chef Darian for preparing the wonderful food we were able to enjoy,” said Aubrey Calhoun, associate executive director of the Buffalo City Mission. “With so many events and gatherings put on hold over the last year, we’re thrilled to be able to enjoy this meal together in our new center – a symbol of support, community and inclusivity.”

Led by Buffalo Bills team chaplain Len Vanden Bos, the event served meals to more than 70 individuals. In addition to the food served, guests enjoyed giveaway items donated by the Buffalo Bills, music entertainment and interactions with the coaches.

“Giving back to the community is a pillar of the Buffalo Bills organization, so we are excited for the opportunity to be able to work with the Buffalo City Mission,” said Leslie Frazier, Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator/assistant head coach. “The work they do makes an incredible impact on the lives of those they serve, and we are blessed to join them for an afternoon of giving back.”

This event was the third Buffalo Bills community meal at the City Mission. Community meals with the coaches were served in 2018 and 2019, but were paused in 2020 due to pandemic restrictions.

Officially opened in March, the City Mission’s 75,000-square-foot Alfiero Center provides preventative services on the front end to decrease the percentage of homelessness year-over-year for those who are on the brink of homelessness. It delivers more complete care to individuals who already experience homelessness. Notable features include space for social service agencies, case management, mental health services, medical care, the first recuperative care unit in Buffalo, job training, education, food and clothing.
