Mark your calendars on July 11 for the return of the Grand Island Garden Walk.

With the pandemic in 2020 forcing the cancellation of the Island’s Garden Walk, the planning committee has been working this year on plans to provide a safe event for participants and attendees. Garden walks across the region are moving forward with 2021 events, planning for safe and enjoyable garden-viewing adventures for all by adding masking and social distancing to the walk participation guidelines.

As we plan for the July event, the Garden Walk committee is staying on top of the latest state and CDC guidance and directives and will follow the guidelines in effect at the time of the event to ensure safety regulations are implemented.

With spring already here, we are reaching out to ask for gardeners interested in adding their gardens in the 2021 walk. During the past year, as people were required to stay home, many turned to gardening as a way to keep busy and to connect with the outdoors. Seed catalog supplies have been sold-out and plant sales at nurseries have increased substantially.

As more people have turned to the joy and comfort that plants can bring, interest in gardening has expanded in many homes. If you, too, have enjoyed your gardens the past year and for those of you who may have begun learning and creating your gardens, we invite you to join the 2021 Grand Island Garden Walk and to share your gardens with the community.

The Garden Walk is a free event for participating gardens and for the public. All kinds of gardens, from large to small, shady to sunny, are invited to participate. If you are developing new gardens or adding a unique theme to your landscape, consider sharing it in this year’s walk. A garden is a grand experiment in learning, adapting and evolving – there is no such thing as a perfect garden!

If you are interested in placing your gardens in the 2021 Garden Walk, applications are being accepted now until June 1 and can be found online at www.grandislandgardenwalk.com or by calling Jan at 716-465-7396 or Nancy at 716-435-9738. Email inquiries can be sent to [email protected].

Donations to support the 2021 Grand Island Garden Walk are also gratefully accepted and the contributions will help make this year’s event a continued annual success. Checks can be made payable to Bridgeview Garden Club and mailed to 3280 Stony Point Road, Grand Island, NY 14072. We are very grateful to all who open their gardens to the public and for the continued generous support of individuals and local businesses.

Get ready to explore the Island and its beautiful gardens and natural scenery during the Grand Island Garden Walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 11. Information on the walk can be found at: www.grandislandgardenwalk.com. Garden Walk maps will be available on the day of the walk at the Town Commons Gazebo, 2255 Baseline Road.
