'Art of Jazz' series at Kleinhans Music Hall announced for 2022

Featuring The Campbell Brothers, Anat Cohen and Trio Brasileiro, Ethan Iverson & Tom Harrell, Catherine Russell

In anticipation of the reopening of concert venues in time for the 2021-22 season, Kleinhans Music Hall announced the return of the “Art of Jazz” series in 2022 – including two of the shows canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, and introducing two additional performers for a four-concert series.

“Art of Jazz” producer Bruce Eaton said, “We are thrilled about the return of live music and very excited with the lineup of artists for 2022. They represent our commitment to presenting the top jazz artists in the world to our audience.”

•The Campbell Brothers Present John Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’

Sunday, Feb. 6, 3 p.m.

The acknowledged masters of the sacred steel guitar, the Campbell Brothers have electrified audiences coast-to-coast with their unique blend of African American gospel featuring steel guitars and soaring vocals. For this special performance, the Campbells will perform John Coltrane’s jazz classic “A Love Supreme,” recasting Coltrane’s iconic work with their signature slide guitars while capturing the album’s transcendent message in a joyous concert experience. (Commissioned by Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors and Duke Performances at Duke University.)

•Anat Cohen and Trio Brasileiro

Sunday, March 6, 3 p.m.

For well over a decade, Tel-Aviv native Anat Cohen has been voted “Clarinetist of the Year” in numerous polls by jazz critics and fans alike. In her Buffalo debut, the three-time Grammy nominee will feature the celebrated Brazilian group Trio Brasileiro.

Two of modern jazz’s leading lights unite to explore the classic post-war jazz repertoire that made New York City the “Jazz Capital of the World.” A founding member of the Bad Plus, one of the most successful and groundbreaking jazz groups of the 21st century, pianist Ethan Iverson is a restless visionary with a deep respect for jazz history. Tom Harrell, voted trumpeter of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, is one of the most creative and lyrical jazz artists of the time, with discography of over 280 recordings that spans more than five decades and features a virtual who’s-who of modern jazz. 

•Catherine Russell

Friday, May 13, 8 p.m.

Grammy-winning vocalist Catherine Russell is the rarest of entities – a genuine jazz and blues vocalist who puts her joyful stamp on the great African American songbook from the “Swing Era” and beyond. The daughter of Luis Russell – pianist and music director for the immortal Louis Armstrong – Catherine has headlined around the world, been awarded the prestigious Prix Du Jazz Vocal by the French Jazz Academy, and toured with Steely Dan and Paul Simon. She draws comparisons to Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith and Dinah Washington.

Kleinhans Music Hall Director Daniel Hart said, “Kleinhans was thrilled to be in a position to host this important series while the Albright-Knox Art Gallery is closed for construction. We lost half a seasons’ worth of great jazz to the pandemic, but we will be back with a stellar lineup for 2022. We hope to see you then!”
