Buffalo: Brown announces official start of 2021 residential paving season

City will invest more than $58 million on major projects & residential street paving, sidewalk work

Mayor Byron Brown and the City of Buffalo Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets announced the official start of the 2021 residential paving season, which includes residential paving and sidewalk work across the city.

The city will invest more than $10.5 million in residential paving and $3.9 million in sidewalk work, as well as over $44 million in major infrastructure projects this year, bringing Buffalo's total infrastructure investments to over $290 million since 2006.

"My administration is continuing the great infrastructure work our city residents have come to expect and deserve,” Brown said. “We've made significant investments in repaving streets and fixing sidewalks in every corner of Buffalo since 2006, and we're ready to further improve the quality of life for our residents, businesses and visitors. This year we've scheduled 155 paving projects which will improve 48.9 miles of city streets."

DPW Commissioner Michael J. Finn, P.E., said, “The Department of Public Works is happy to kickoff a busy construction season delivering improvements in all corners of the city. Residents are reminded to follow paper posted parking restrictions to facilitate the construction work,"

•Milling ahead of residential street repaving has begun on the following streets:

  • Timon Street – High to Best
  • Ellicott Street – Best to Dodge
  • Green Way Alley – Breckenridge to Auburn
  • Lovering Avenue – Hertel to Taunton
  • Hertel Avenue – Delaware to Fairchild
  • Commonwealth Avenue – Hertel to Taunton

Paving has begun or will start soon at the following locations:

  • E. Ferry Street – Masten to Lonsdale
  • Masten Avenue – Main to Glenwood
  • Best Street – Main to Fosdick
  • Kingsley Street – Jefferson to Humboldt

Parking restrictions will be in place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. wherever milling and paving is ongoing.

•Sidewalk Replacements:

  • Various sites in the Ellicott and Fillmore districts
  • Cushing Place – Abbott to Onondaga
  • Hancock Avenue – Kimberly to Eden

•Major new and continuing 2021 infrastructure projects:

  • Cars sharing Main Street – Lower Main: Scott to Exchange
  • Niagara Street – phase 3: Hampshire to Forest
  • Niagara Street – phase 4A: Forest to Hertel
  • Abbott Road streetscape phase 1: Southside to Meriden
  • Main Street paving: Ferry to Delavan
  • Bridge washing: Various locations citywide
  • Ohio Street and Michigan Avenue lift bridge rehabilitations
  • Clinton Street rehabilitation and safe routes to school: Pine Street to Jefferson Avenue
  • Walden Avenue pavement rehabilitation: Genesee Street to Sycamore Street
  • Virginia-Burton complete streets – BNMC phase 4
  • Entertainment district: Chippewa, Franklin and Court

Brown and the DPW urged the driving public to be on the lookout for street resurfacing crews as they're driving around the city. If drivers encounter a crew at work, they should slow down and keep the crews safe.
