Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, in collaboration with the Lucille and Jack Yellen Foundation, announced the winner of the 2020 songwriter’s scholarship competition: Gunther’s Radio, with band members John Fera, Parker Ford and Jeff Colson. They performed their original composition, “Let Me Go.”

Three local young songwriters competed, playing and singing their original songs in front of a judge’s panel of Buffalo Music Hall of Fame inductees Dick Bauerle (Class of 1988), Linda Rose Lombardo Appleby (2015) and Frank Grizanti (2007).

Teddy Hibbard, Cameron Markott and Gunther’s Radio performed their original songs on stage in front of the judges and a live audience. Each contestant performed a three-song set with the last number their songwriter’s submission. Based on their cumulative scores, the songwriter with the highest score was named the scholarship winner.

The Yellen Scholarship winner receives a recording session at Black Rock EPS recording studio, where they will have their winning song recorded, mixed and mastered. Buffalo Music Hall of Fame inductees will be on hand as session musicians and mentors. The song will then be placed on a CD and presented to the songwriter.

The Lucille and Jack Yellen Foundation and the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame has been awarding young songwriters up to the age of 23 the chance to professionally record an original song since 2013.

BMHOF was unable to hold the scheduled songwriter’s scholarship competition in 2020 due to the pandemic.
